A really easy way to do this is to not create and reconfigure the particles every frame, but instead to do it once when the ship is created, and then rebirth it each frame, pushing it back onto the after effects queue.
This will save a lot of loading, math and more. Easily enough when a subsystem like an engine is damaged, I can just delete the aftereffect, so I still have control. Super duper great!
